The main regions for wine growing in this area are South Moravia (Czechia) and the Tokaj area of Slovakia.
One of the reasons why South Moravia gives birth to wines of original taste and renowned diversity is the various types of terrain, different soils and microclimate. It is possible to find 30 varieties of white wines and some 26 red varieties. In the Czech Republic there are more than 700 registered wineries from big companies to small family firms, and thousands of small private wine makers. Therefore the resulting style of individual wine makers ensures that Moravian wines are everything but insipid and mediocre.
Slovakian wine is becoming better known in the West thanks to a surge in new estates and young winemakers, creating wines which are uniquely Slovakian, with both international varieties and a large range of crossed varieties in a market looking for something new.
Red Wine Varieties: Agni, Alibernet, André, Ariana, Blauburger, Cabernet Moravia, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cerason, Domina, Dornfelder, Frankovka (Lemberger), Fratava, Kofranka, Laurot, Merlot, Modrý Portugal (Blauer Portigieser), Nativa, Neronet, Rubinet, Rulandské, modré (Pinot Noir), Sevar, Svatovavřinecké (Saint Laurent ), Zweigeltrebe.
White Wine Varieties: Aurelius, Auxerrois, Děvín, Erilon, Florianka, Hibernal, Chardonnay, Irsai Oliver, Kerner, Lena, Malverina, Müller Thurgau, Muškát moravský (Moravian Muscat ), Muškát Ottonel, Neuburské (Neuburger), Pálava, Rinot, Rulandské bílé (Pinot Blanc), Rulandské šedé (Pinot gris), Ryzlink rýnský (Riesling), Ryzlink vlašský (Welschriesling), Sauvignon (blanc), Savilon, Sylvánské zelené (Sylvaner), Tramín červený (Gewurzt
